Mahjong Four Rivers is a connect-style tile-matching game that has a theme based on four major Chinese rivers often referred to as dragons. The player's goals are to clear ivory-colored, round-cornered tiles from levels and earn coins and star time bonuses.
The game displays different numbers of tiles on each level. Some levels have more or smaller tiles. The initial set of tiles features classic Mahjong characters and symbols. When the player earns between 500 and 3,000 coins, they can unlock tiles with new icons that include modified classic symbols, standard playing cards, world flags, and fruits and vegetables. They can earn extra coins by viewing advertisements.
On each level, the player must remove matching pairs of tiles by following connect rules. They can match a pair along the same pattern edge or across a gap by using no more than three connecting lines. If they attempt any other type of selection, the game displays red failure lines instead of green success ones.
Mahjong Four Rivers makes the rules harder to navigate by altering the positions of the tiles in complicated ways. For example, on levels that display "gravity" in the title, upper tiles in a pattern slide down into gaps created from matches of lower tiles. On levels marked "anti-gravity," the tiles fill gaps by sliding upward.
The player offsets these difficulties with three boosters. They can use a standard hint magnifier that reveals a pair or shuffle arrows that rearrange the tiles to create new selection options. Additionally, they can select a magnet booster that removes every tile from the field that matches a selected one.
